FNYCRR Award: Best Steak Tartare Food Cart

Tartae ToGo - Redhook Park, Greenpoint, Brooklyn

Steak Tartare carts have been springing up all over the three boroughs (Staten Island and the Bronx excluded, natch) ever since one was prominently featured in a scene in the latest Mathew McConaughey romcom, Empire State of Grind. Maybe it’s a bad idea to serve raw beef from a sidewalk street cart, but we defy you to try the tartare at Tartae ToGo in Redhook Park and not want to duck behind the nearest tree with a bottle of Pinot Noir and just…dig in.

Sole owner and operator of the cart Dominic Victorino knows a thing or two about steak tartare; His father was head chef at famed Upper East Side restaurant Aluminum UES.

“I saw the Greenpoint food carts on an episode of No Reservations,” says Victorino, “And I went over to 4th St., you know, where they store the used food carts in that big garage. And I gave 40 bucks to the guy who was working in there, and walked out with this awesome cart.”

The amazing tartare recipe isn’t the only thing the elder Victorino passed on to his son:

“My dad explained to me where Greenpoint was. I had no idea it was in Brooklyn. I thought it was in Philly.”
