Ask FNYCRR:
Dear FNYCRR,
Thanks again for answering my last question!
Could you please review this restaurant in Astoria called Indofunk’s Kitchen? I hear great things about it, but only from the owner/head chef/sole proprietor, so I think the reviews may be slightly biased. Thanks, Hsitas
Hello Hsitas,

Ask FNYCRR:
Dear Fake NYC Restaurant Reviews,
There used to be a food cart in the Wall St area way back when I was temping that not only had the best rotis, but also this totally toxic hot sauce that actually had to request them to put only a little on (“slight pepper” in patois). Where can I get a really good West Indian roti in the city?
Thanks!

FNYCRR Award: Best Nalc Bar in Brooklyn
The Virgin Surgeon (664 Bedford Ave.)
Now that the recession is officially over, young New Yorkers are realizing they have better things to do than spend their time crying over their micro-brews. It’s time to get serious about working hard, making connections, and philosophizing about indie rock. That’s why “Nalc Bars,” or non-alcoholic bars, are popping up all over Brooklyn and Downtown...

Periwinkle Fob
Periwinkle Fob - 263 Fourth Ave.
Few chefs have shot into celebrity status as quickly and as publicly as Michael Bungt, mastermind behind the Periwinkle chain. Whether he’s showing Rachel Ray’s audience how to paralyze a live flounder or grinning and bearing it while Martha Stewart forces him to make an orchid and citrus tablescape, Bungt is all over our TV screens, newspapers, and magazines,...

Dear Fake NYC Restaurant Reviews,
Love the blog! I am a gay New Yorker and I’m having trouble finding a brunch spot that is not only gay friendly with an amazing menu, but also allows cigar smoking. I know it’s an odd request, but there’s got to be something like that here in NYC or Brooklyn. Thanks and keep it up!

FNYCRR Award: Best New Dive Bar
Mobilize – 486 7th St., Gowanus, Brooklyn
A Man, A Plan, A Canal…GOWANUS! Mobilize used to be your stereotypical by-the-waterfront dive bar. That is, until owner/bartendress Janine Wise took over. She knows a thing or two about what hipsters are looking for in a watering hole… her cousin happens to be the drummer/flautist for Les Savy Fav.
The place has assumed an almost-quaint retro...

FNYCRR Award: Best Bronx Style Pizza in Manhattan
Co-op City Pizza – Tribeca
The Bronx is burning! No, we don’t mean it’s actually on fire, we mean this charming area is heating up the food world at a rapid pace. Some are even starting to refer to it as “The Fourth Bourough.” We wouldn’t quite go that far (literally and figuratively), but we will admit, Bronx style pizza is truly something “dope.” Besides sporting a slightly thicker crust and...

Tomato Andy W’s - East Village
Tomato Andy W’s - 222 Ave. B
Samantha Rhody’s unassuming new East Village shop, Tomato Andy W’s, arrives at the precise moment when New Yorkers’ highly honed palates are experiencing a bit of fatigue. They want delicious food, but they desire something simple. Something classic. Something that looks like it came out of a can, but didn’t. Tomato Andy W’s raison d’être, and the centerpiece of its...

Salty dogs
FOOD TREND ALERT!
When the economy is in the tank, NYC foodies turn to simpler (read, less expensive) ingredients and fads to get their kicks. Well, it doesn’t get simpler than salt. Here’s the best of the best in a town that’s suddenly got a bad case of NaCl fever.
Strand Salt $9

La Casa Del Tostones - Washington Heights
La Casa Del Tostones – 56 178th St. nr. St. Nicholas Ave.
This Washington Heights social hub made news recently when head chef Manuel Ortiz was convicted for organizing cock fights in the basement of this fried food paradise/barbershop. Now that the cockfights have moved next door to El Patacones (deli/barbershop, 58 178th St.), Manuel’s son Tito is now behind the counter serving up...

FNYCRR Award: Best Steak Tartare Food Cart
Tartae ToGo - Redhook Park, Greenpoint, Brooklyn
Steak Tartare carts have been springing up all over the three boroughs (Staten Island and the Bronx excluded, natch) ever since one was prominently featured in a scene in the latest Mathew McConaughey romcom, Empire State of Grind. Maybe it’s a bad idea to serve raw beef from a sidewalk street cart, but we defy you to try the tartare at Tartae...

Pupi - Flushing, Queens
Pupi - 300 Roosevelt Ave. Flushing, Queens
Pupi specializes in ykasisi, a form of cuisine said to have originated in sixteenth-century Tokyo, initially as an accompaniment to a meeting with a geisha. To eat the full, 17-course meal at Pupi, you have to book a week or two (or three) in advance, since many of the esoteric ingredients are delivered via steamboat, directly from Japan.
The ambiance...

Ratatouille - Times Square
Ratatouille 446 42nd St.
Middle-American rubes aren’t the only ones enjoying the Shrimp Bolognese Tanglers (deep fried tomato and shrimp balls, $16) at this Disney movie-themed chain; We caught some LES documentary filmmakers last weekend sipping on some fluorescent pink “Mouse-a-ritas” at the bar. They claim they where there making a film about the Post-Giuliani Times Square, but we think...

FNYCRR Award: Best View of Low Flying Planes
Plane (Battery Park) The decision to put a trendy eatery on the top floor of a high rise in the middle of Battery Park was controversial in itself. The decision to have passenger jets circle dangerously close to the open air dining room was… downright scary. That is, until we tried the balsamic walnut encrusted pear appetizer ($14). That, plus the acceptance of the fact that the New York...

FNYCRR Award: Best Duck Fat Candy Apple
Fat (42 Lafayette St.) When Chef Bernard LeToquiuieuie stepped down as head chef of Cardboard (E 19th St.) to open this tiny downtown location that focuses specifically on duck fat infused candy apples, he had plenty of naysayers. Seems that LeToquiuieuie is having the last laugh as droves line up around the block to get a taste of these slightly sweet, slightly savory creations on a stick at Fat....

Rot - West Village
Rot - West Village 699 Hudson St., West Village The contender for spiciest (and stinkiest) dish in the city should draw rotten heat-seeking chowhounds to Rot, a restaurant that opened in the West Village this June. This dish is the not subtly named Rotten Spinach on Fire. Lest the timid be turned off: Rot also explores the complexities of Southern Thai dishes that have nothing to do with heat or...
